The International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian
Medicine (IASTAM) will hold its Seventh International Congress (ICTAM)
in September, 7th to 11th 2009 at the Institute of Traditional Medicine
Services, Thimphu in Bhutan. The theme for the Seventh Congress is "Asian Medicine: Cultivating Traditions and the Challenges of
Globalisation." The theme is purposefully wide. IASTAM invites proposals for papers on the cultivation of the body, of plants and
traditional knowledge and practice. IASTAM also invite proposals on the challenges faced by the globalisation of traditional Asian medicines, tensions between local and global production, interpretation, professionalisation and evaluation, as well as issues of trade, economy and ecology.
IASTAM encourages papers from scholars from all science and humanities disciplines as well as from practitioners of traditional Asian medicine (Unani, acupuncture, Sowa Rigpa, Ayurveda etc.). Proposals on any theme or topic are welcome, but papers that address the themes of cultivation and globalisation will be given preference, as will proposals for organized panels over individual papers (A list of panels is available on this site)
Panel and paper abstracts of not more than 250 words should be sent via e-mail attachment to Emma Griffin by August 1st, 2008 (iastam.org@hotmail.com). Please send abstracts in the Tibetan language to Theresia Hofer (t.hofer@ucl.ac.uk). Places are limited and with Bhutan being a popular destination they are bound to be filled by September 2008.
Registration for the conference is set at £150 and payable as soon as your abstract has been accepted. Six months before the conference, every conference participant has to submit a one-page abstract of the paper presented and its translation into the language most relevant to the audience addressed.

Asian Medicine is a multidisciplinary journal aimed at researchers and practitioners of Asian medicine. It makes available in one single
publication academic essays that explore the historical, anthropological, sociological and philological dimensions of Asian
medicine as well as practice reports from clinicians based in Asia and in Western countries.
Funding
IASTAM is providing registration and accommodation subsidies for the registration of 50 participants who are resident in Asian countries and earn local salaries, and who otherwise would not be able to attend. Awards will be made on the basis of the quality of the abstracts, which will be evaluated by the panel of the committee members (travel expenses not included, but we are trying to have more external funding which might enable us to also fund these).
